The school year had just begun last July 3, 2008 when around 25 students of St. Rose of Lima High School in Nueva Ecija province, Philippines, opened the Culture Capsule from the Gymnazium J. Chalupku in Brezno, Slovakia.
It was the first time for a number of the students to hear about Slovakia or Europe so, to deepen their understanding of the exchange, a member of a local choir that had already toured Europe gave a talk on his experiences. Afterwards, the students organized an Asia-Europe Club to promote interest in the two hemispheres in their school.
Finally, it was time to open the box. The students were excited to get letters, postcards, pictures, and even toys. They expressed interest in maintaining contact with their newfound friends from Slovakia and participating in future exchanges.
